The Glass Menagerie is a memory play by Tennesse Williams that premiered in 1944. Although a five-character play, the Glass Menagerie is a powerful piece that mirrors the lives of three people in a family. From the onset, it is notable that the mother, son, and daughter are entrapped in their unique miseries thereby creating a melancholic household. Tom works at a shoe warehouse store and is bored both by the job and the routine of taking care of the family. On the other hand, Amanda, the mother, spends a major part of her time relieving the memory of her husband. The daughter of the Wingfield household, Laura, mostly stays indoors and makes glass menageries. It is notable, therefore, that the characters adopt figurative masks to deal with miseries. The characters have a difficult time accepting and coping with reality and as a result, retreat into their private cocoons (masks) where they get the comfort and purpose that the real world fails to offer.....................
